Child Illnesses

Cold

Take a betal leaf, apply on it vicks. Slightly heat on the reverse of the leaf. Keep the warm leaf on the chest of the infant

Upto one year of age, take saffron and mix it with mother’s milk and apply on the forehead of the child. A little of thulsi juice can be mixed with honey and given as intake.

Upto 12 years of age, rub virali manjal, add little lime powder and boil and apply on forehead

Breathing problem

Smear a little mustard oil on the betal leaves, warm them and apply over chest when bearably hot

Constipation

Soak some raisins in hot water for half an hour. Take out the raisins, squeeze them and make the child drink that water.

As a preventive, grind vasambu and make it to tablets. Keep it in betal leaf and slightly heat it over a burning candle. Then apply it on the tongue of the child upto one year of age

Teething

Teething in children should start around 5 to 6 months and by two and half years, they should have twenty milk teeth, i.e. temporary teeth, which would remain upto 5 to 6 years. The permanent teeth would come out thereafter which would be 28 plus 4 wisdom teeth. During the period of eruption of temporary teeth, the child might have some irritation around the gums and would put items/thumb to its mouth. As these might contain dirt, etc. the child gets infected resulting in vomitting, fever, diarrohoea, etc. Otherwise teething as such is a normal process and is not connected with these problems.

Indigestion

Take one betal leaf and some omam and rub both well in hand and take the juice and apply on the stomach. Then put your palm above burning candle and put your palm on the stomach of the infant and thus transfer the heat.

As a preventive, grind vasambu and make it to tablets. Keep it in betal leaf and slightly heat it over a burning candle. Then apply it on the tongue of the child upto one year of age.

If the child had taken more milk and the stomach is bulging, take two big betel leaves, apply castor oil on one side, slightly warm up the leaf and just keep it on the stomach of the child. The bulge will go

Unrest in the stomach or vomitting

Take omam, three betal leaves, heeng, a little dry ginger and garlic and grind them all. Put the paste in warm water and mix well and make the infant to drink

Colic

If the child cries at night, the mother should go and cuddle the child.
If the cry stops, it means it was only crying for attention.
If the cry does not stop, give milk. If stops, it means it was crying out of hunger
If the cry does not stop, take little honey and give in the child’s mouth
Even then if it does not stop, know that the child has some trouble

In general, to avoid colic, boil one table spoon of ajwain in two litres of water and reduce to one fourth water. Give to child this water which is very medicinal.

Stomach pain

Try applying around the naval some castor oil and even put some oil inside the naval
Smear little castor oil on a betal leaf, warm it over flame and place it on the naval

Boils

Mix to turmeric powder some soap and apply on the boil. It will ripe fast and break

Maandam and fits

Take a new full pencil and keep it across between teeth
Take juice of ginger and add sugar and feed to the child
Crush garlic and tie in a cloth and keep above a burning candle. You will find some oil coming out of the garlic. Take that oil and apply it on the child’s palm, sole/feet, chest and both the sides of the chest. If you have neem oil, that can also be similarly applied. In fact keep these things handy at home for timely use

Take a betal leaf, apply on it vicks. Slightly heat on the reverse of the leaf. Keep the warm leaf on the chest of the infant

Smear a little mustard oil on the betal leaves, warm them and apply over chest when bearably hot

Problem in urination

If the infant has problem in passing urine or stools, give more warm water 3 to 4 times and avoid sugar

Soak a white cloth with mothers milk and keep on the naval. If absence of mother’s milk, soak it in simple water and do the same.

Throbbing pain in leg or hand

Take betal leaf and lime powder and crush them and apply on the affected part
Similarly you can also take the juice out of crushing murungai leaf and salt

To increase strength in the legs

Apply and massage daily with mustard oil. For children with specially weak legs, make the child stand on sand in the river bed. Also put his legs on water used for washing rice. It may take time to get the cure but the effort has to continue.

Worms in the stomach

Take handful of tender leaves of neem, one piece dry ginger and little omam and grind to tablets and keep. Give three tablets in empty stomach with little salt.

Skin troubles

Soak some neem leaves in bathing water for some time. Then use that water to bathe the baby
If there are infections, keep onion and green turmeric both crushed, by the side of the child. They have the ability to absorb the germs.

For inside injuries

Children are likely to fall here and there and sustain injuries. Whether there are out outside injuries or not, there could be injuries inside. So on all such instances, make the child drink warm milk added with turmeric powder.

To improve memory

Before going to bed at night, take little grind vasambu and add it to warm water and give to drink. Use it for children upto 12 years.

What is vasambu

It's called sweet flag or Acrous Calamus in English. It looks more like dry ginger. My mother has used it for my baby's stomach issues. As per mother and grandmothers it's safe for infants.
